When learning a new game, like Roulette, it is especially important to learn the basic terms and vocab that are associated with it. This will help you to have a clearer understanding of the game. Below are the commonly used terms in Roulette. Read and learn them well, because they will help you to understand Roulette better and may help you win your next Roulette game.

American Roulette - The Roulette game using a roulette wheel numbered 0 to 36 with an additional slot numbered double zero (00). Because of this additional 00 slot, American roulette has a higher house advantage as compared with French or European Roulette.

Black - A bet on any of the Black numbers on the Roulette table. This bet pays even money or 1:1.

Chips - The chips used specifically in roulette.

Column Bet - A single bet on one of the three columns of numbers. This bet pays 2:1.

Corner Bet - A single bet on four numbers. This bet pays 8:1.

Double Zero - A single bet on the 00 number on the wheel. This bet pays 35:1.

Dozens Bet - A single bet on one of the three groups of 12 numbers; i.e. 1 to 12, 13 to 24, or 25 to 36. This bet pays 2:1.

Even Bet - A bet on an even number on the roulette table. Like the Black bet, this also pays even money.

French Roulette - This roulette variant has a wheel with slots numbered from 0 to 36. Because it does not have the 00 (double zero) as in American Roulette, the house advantage is better.

High or Low - A bet on 18 numbers. The High bet would mean a bet on numbers 19 to 36 and Low would mean a bet on numbers 1 to 18.

House Advantage - The percentage advantage that a casino has over a Player.

Inside Bet - A bet placed on the numbers on the inside of the roulette table. Straight bets, Split bets, Street bets, Corner bets, and Line bets are all different kinds of Inside bets. Inside bets are paid out at 5:1 all the way up to 35:1.

Line Bet - A bet on any six adjoining numbers. This bet pays 5:1.

Odd Bet - A bet on any of the odd numbers on the roulette table. Like the Even bet, this pays out at 1:1.

Outside Bet - A bet that is placed on the numbers on the outside of the roulette table; including Column bets, Dozen bets, Black bets, Red bets, Odd bets, Even bets, High bets, and Low bets. All outside bets pay even money.

Red bet - This is a bet on any of the red numbers on the roulette table. It pays out 1:1.

Six Number Bet - A single bet on six numbers. It pays out at 5:1.

Slots - The sections of the wheel where the numbers are displayed.

Special Line Bet - Also known as a Five Number bet, it is a single bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. It is the worst possible bet in Roulette and can only be made in American Roulette games. It pays 6:1.

Split Bet - A bet on any two adjoining numbers.

Straight Bet - A bet on a single number. It pays out at 35:1.
